A school teacher sent home in Ottawa for allegedly cutting the hair of 7-year-old autism boy at school without mother’s permission.
The 7-year-old mother Miriam Brandon recalls the frequents calls she has received from his son’s teacher requesting to cut his son’s hair because his son won’t stop chewing on his own hair, the hair is too long it keeps covering his face. And she responded that his son had refused to cut his because he wanted his hair to grow out to touch the ground.
However, the teacher called the mother to say his son had granted him the permission to cut his hair and he cut the hair, she said she was shocked to hear that.
“I know that my son would never say that it was OK because he has asked me to never cut his hair,” she said.
She said she noticed that his son’s part of hair was gone and she inform the school principal “He’s a teacher, not a hairdresser, and we didn’t get any consent or anything,” she said, following an apology from the school board in a written statement.”We extend our apologies to the student and his family. The district continues to work with the family to ensure the best learning environment for the student.”
She has decided to change her son’s school after March Break, adding, “for a teacher to grab scissors and cut my son’s hair, that takes away my son’s voice, and it takes away my voice as a parent.”
